Scott Mather

Scott Colin Mather passed away on June 6, 2012, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous ten-year battle with cancer. Scott is survived by his loving wife of seventeen years Joanna, and their two sons: Collin and Lee. Scott?s memory will be forever cherished by his parents Dave and Connie, his brother, Jason, and his sister, Tanya. Scott left us entirely too soon and is survived by a large extended family: Scott?s grandmother Betty Colpitts, Aunt Debbie Heldt & family, Aunt Rhonda Battilocchi & family, Uncle Rick & Donna Abraham, Aunt Lila Snider & family, Aunt Karen Long & family, Aunt Holly Stonebarger & family, Aunt Sharon Rash & family, Robert Abraham, Uncle Cliff Mather & family, and Pamela Sanseri & family. Scott was equally loved by his father and mother in law, Terry and Genney Wakeman, brothers in law Teryl and Will, and Uncle Pete Mitsopoulos. Scott was preceded in death by his grandparents Cliff and Donna Mather, step-grandfather Jim Colpitts, great-grandmother Ila (Nelson) Ellis, Bill and Anna Mitsopoulos and Lefty and Lenora Wakeman. On October 13, 1970, Scott was born in Arcata, California. Scott was raised in McKinleyville and attended Morris Elementary School, McKinleyville Jr. High and High School. Upon his high school graduation, Scott went to Germany on a Fulbright Scholarship for basketball. While in Germany Scott perfected his German and played over one hundred games. Scott received an Associate?s Degree from Santa Rosa Junior College and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Humboldt State University in Political Science. In 1996 Scott graduated in the top ten percent of his class from the University of California Hastings College of the Law. Scott worked for the Office of the California Attorney General as a Deputy assigned in correctional law and criminal appeals. Scott was an avid athlete, reader, and sports fan. While pursuing his education, Scott played basketball in high school and college. Among his accolades, Scott was an MVP, all county, and the first all-section player selected from McKinleyville High School. Scott enjoyed science fiction and fantasy novels in addition to strategy games. Scott was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Los Angeles Lakers and seldom, if ever missed a game. He enjoyed attending San Francisco Giants games with colleagues from work as well. Scott was wise and kind and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 8, from 5-8pm with a vigil at 7pm at Fremont Chapel of the Roses, 1940 Peralta Blvd., Fremont, CA 94536. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 9, 11:30am at St. James the Apostle Catholic Church, 34700 Fremont Blvd., Fremont, CA 94555. He will be laid to rest at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward, CA.
